The Sanctuary of Madonna di Pompei
Built at the end of 1800, the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Pompei is a symbol of faith and the sacrifices made by its founder, the beatified Bartolo Longo, who dedicated his life to helping the poor from all around the world.
The story of Longo and the Sanctuary is entwined with the tale of a painting which was used to encourage the inhabitants to practise the rosary. The painting of the Madonna, donated by a nun from the Conservatorio del Rosario di Portamedina, was restored on several occasions by Neapolitan artists to return it to its original splendour and to an exact representation of the saints.
